Degrassi fans are in for the experience of a lifetime this Saturday as the 905 Raptors hit the court this weekend in blue-and-yellow jerseys in homage to the Degrassi Panthers, the fictional team featured heavily in the show. The jerseys are just one of the many tributes to the long-running Canadian show to be featured at the event.
The first annual Degrassi game will take place at 2:00 PM on Saturday at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre in Mississauga. The game will be jam-packed with references to the teen drama and will have in-arena activities alongside appearances from numerous former actors from the show, who are scheduled to be a part of the halftime entertainment. To top it all off, the first two thousand fans to arrive at the venue will receive a Duane Notice shirt in the classic Degrassi colours.
The event comes after Toronto’s unofficial ambassador Drake embraced his Degrassi past last year with the music video for his single “I’m Upset.” The video features several former castmates of the show and even goes as far as to reference old storylines from the show which were heavily featured during his time on the show.
Degrassi has a special place in the hearts of several 905 players, many of whom grew up on the series. “Obviously, we grew up on Degrassi here being in Canada. I have a couple of friends who I grew up with; we used to run home after school to watch the show. So, it’s kind of cool that we have those jerseys for that game,” explained Myck Kabongo, a guard for the 905.
The announcement of the event shows a dramatic shift for the show which has been mocked for it’s overly campy and dramatized depictions of teenage problems. It seems a new appreciation has been found for it now that it’s fans are all adults, and Drake has shown it some love.
