We’ve all seen plenty of movies with crooked cops taking money from criminals in exchange for protection from the law.
Whether it’s a classic like The Godfather or another movie Leonardo DiCaprio didn’t win an Oscar for like The Departed they’ve always captured our imagination.
Well now an actual former cop in Ontario has just been sentenced to 12 and a half years in jail for the way that he protected criminals from the law.
Former Hamilton police officer Craig Ruthowsky helped drug dealers that he was supposed to be investigating in exchange for money.
In like something out of a movie he was caught when other officers caught him in a wiretap talking to the drug dealers.
He has been found guilty of bribery, obstruction of justice, breach of trust and cocaine trafficking.
On top of his 12-and-a-half-year sentence he also has to pay $250,000 by this time next year, if he doesn’t 3 more years will be added to his sentence.
Ruthowsky was suspended from the force in 2012 but had still been getting paid into this year by the police department, last year he made $104,000.
Ruthowsky will also be facing more legal battles later this year for other crimes related to the investigation, including bribery, breach of trust, perjury, cocaine trafficking and weapons trafficking.
The preliminary hearings for that are slated to start in October of this year.
