Auston Matthews Isn't Even Close To Being Toronto's Richest Athlete Despite Signing For $58 Million

Auston Matthews just signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs for $58 million and still isn't Toronto's richest athlete.

In big sports news today, Auston Matthews just signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs for $58 million. The contract extension will keep Matthews with the team for the next five years, but that commitment comes with a pretty steep price tag. In fact, at $58 million for the next five years, Matthews will be taking home around $11.6 million annually.

That being said, Auston Matthews works hard for his money. To many, he is considered the best player on the Toronto Maple Leafs and even one of the top players in the entire league. When he started in 2016, he was drafted first overall. In the 38 games he's played this season, he has 23 goals and 23 assists for a total of 46 points. That means on average, he is getting 1.2 points every single game.

Despite being at the top and his seemingly ridiculous salary, Auston Matthews isn't the richest athlete in Toronto, in fact, he's not even close to being the highest paid athlete in the city. With an annual salary of $11.6 million, he's won't even be the highest paid Maple Leaf next year. Instead, that title goes to John Tavares, who will make $12 million in the 2019-2020 season.

Tavares is only one of the people ahead of Matthews though. In the big picture, neither of them are really rich at all compared to other Toronto athletes.

That's because, in this city, the Maple Leafs actually have the lowest bankroll with approximately $75 million paid annually. Meanwhile, the Toronto Blue Jays have an annual payroll of around $104 million. Then there's the Toronto Raptors, with a total annual payroll almost double the Maple Leafs. They are paying around $141 million each year.

As for who the highest earning players are, the majority of them are on the Raptors. Here's who Toronto's top paid athletes are:

  • Kyle Lowry: $31 million per year
  • Kawhi Leonard: $23 million per year
  • Serge Ibaka: $21.6 million per year
  • Jonas Valanciunas: $16.5 million per year
  • Kendrys Morales: $12 million per year (Toronto Blue Jays)

John Tavares and Auston Matthews would come next in line.

None the less, this is still a massive pay increase for Auston Matthews. Since he first joined as a draft pick, his starting salary was only $925,000/year, which is extremely low for hockey, but normal for players who are just starting out. Now he's multiplying that by at least 11.

As if these numbers weren't crazy enough, another thing to keep in mind is that in all three of these sports, the salaries are negotiated in American dollars, even for teams in Canada. So while he's living here, Matthew's new bigger paycheck will be worth even more.
