Most Torontonians thought that without a Ford in the running for this year's mayoral election that the campaign trail would be a lot tamer than recent years. Unfortunately that was until Faith Goldy joined the race in late July.
If Goldy's name rings a bell but you aren't sure why, the 29 year old mayoral candidate has been a controversial one to say the least as she has been branded an alt right supporter who believes the white genocide conspiracy theory is real. She also had a stint as a personality on Rebel Media, an insanely controversial Canadian media site that is frequented by white supramacists.
Naturally with the nature of Goldy's mayoral venture having to do with pushing a more controversial platform, other candidates such as John Tory and Jennifer Keesmaat have outrighted refused to debate with her. Most candidates acting as if she isn't even in the race out of desire to not give Goldy a public platform outside of her Twitter, Instagram and YouTube channel.
Though Goldy's latest upload to her YouTube channel showed she has had enough of being ignored, titling her video "Faith Ambushes Outgoing Toronto Mayor." In the video Goldy arrives to an area downtown where John Tory is giving an interview to the press with a group of supporters and Faith decides to approach him and try to debate him right then and there.
The result is incredibly awkward to say the least, when the supporters surrounding Tory see Goldy weaseling through their group in an attempt to reach Tory and begins yelling at him, the supporter group starts to cheer for Tory so that nobody can hear Goldy speak. On top of that, John Tory doesn't even look in Goldy's direction and just keeps speaking to the press.
After Tory finishes speaking with the press, Goldly attempts to follow him into a building while yelling until she reaches the door where security blocks her from going inside. From there she moves on to finding other press on site and begins an awkwardly aggressive speech about her platform. Shortly after she then poses for a few photos with fans then speaks to her own cameraman about Tory's "sheep."
This isn't the first controversy Goldy has found herself in considering both Bell and Rogers media have refused to air her campaign commercials on their channels. On top of that Doug Ford recently got in trouble for taking a photo with Goldy earlier in the year.
Clearly Goldy isn't going down without a fight, even if none of the candidates are bothering to engage in one with her. While you would think a majority of the city would be against the candidate, there is some concern that her support has been growing over the past few months. In the end though we'll only know for sure of Goldy's true support once the election results are in.
