Police are continuing to investigate the abduction and murder of 11-year-old Riya Rajkumar, after her father, Roopesh Rajkumar, died in a Toronto trauma centre on Wednesday night. The 41-year-old man remained in hospital with a self-inflicted gunshot wound after he was taken into police custody on Friday after being arrested around midnight near Orillia, Ontario.  A high-risk takedown preceded his arrest and was provoked by an investigation into his daughter's abduction, which began at 7:00 pm the night before.

On Wednesday night, police confirmed in a press release that Rajkumar had succumbed to his injuries, and died in hospital. “Investigators from the homicide and missing persons bureau are continuing their investigation into the death of Riya Rajkumar."

Riya was out with her father to celebrate her birthday the night of her disappearance, according to investigators.  She did not return to her mother's home at the time that had been agreed upon by her parents.

The police were notified by Riya's mother when Rajkumar informed her that he planned to harm both himself and their daughter.  An Amber Alert was issued at around 11:30 pm, urging the public to be on the lookout for Riya.  Sadly, police verified that the girl's body had been located in her father's home a short time thereafter.
