Walmart Canada is taking a fresh spin on prepared foods by partnering with Freshii, a Canadian fast casual restaurant franchise that serves vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free meals and snacks, including burritos, wraps, soups, salads, and frozen yogurt. Freshii will start selling its prepared foods at some Walmart locations in Ontario. The Toronto-based restaurant company has stated that its products will be in 100 Walmart Canada stores and available online by the end of April.
Canadians are obsessed with Freshii, and for good reason. If we love anything, it's eating farm-fresh food that we can feel good about. And that's exactly what Freshii - our home-grown homage to the unique cuisines and flavours that Toronto has to offer - promises to deliver to its customers.
😋 I cheated today and bought an umami salad from Freshii. But, salad intake occurred so I'm happy. pic.twitter.com/s7HGOS05rY— K.y.r.a (@nabetafish) February 21, 2019
This news follows Freshii's net loss of $483,000 USD for the quarter ending at the end of December 2018, compared with a net loss of $620,000 for the same quarter of the prior year. Freshii's total revenues, including its franchised shops and its company-owned retail outlets, was up $800,000 from the prior year.
Freshii has expanded to over 100 locations through Canada, the U.S., Colombia, Peru, Sweden, Austria, Switzerland, Ireland, and the United Arab Emirates, with franchises under development in Germany, Guatemala, and Saudi Arabia.
By the end of this year, the company had expected to have 760 locations worldwide. But since November, that number has been significantly reduced.
The company has come a long way since 2005, when it initially opened as "Lettuce Eatery" by Corrin. Lettuce Eatery was met with tremendous success on its first day, with large queues of hungry customers lining the block of its storefront. The restaurant ended up running out of food before the end of lunch on the day of its grand opening.
Matthew Corrin, Freshii's CEO, has stated that the company has a lot of work to do in the year ahead and will focus on streamlining in-store operations, spicing up its menu, and investing in marketing and technology.
