Here’s A Complete List Of Today's Closures And Cancellations Across The GTA

The latest school board, university, college, and daycare closures and bus, flight, and TTC cancellations

The mother of all snowstorms is upon us, and as meteorologists expected, it’s a doozy.  Toronto has been anxiously anticipating the worst of winter today, with Environment Canada warning of gusty winds, freezing rain, ice pellets, and an estimated 25 centimetres of snow in some regions.  This morning’s temperature will feel like -19°C with the wind chill.  Snow has already begun falling (just in time for our morning commute!) and the frosty combination of blowing snow and fierce winds nearing 80 km/h suggests that commuters will experience sudden and significantly reduced road visibility. Great.

Here is a complete list of closures and cancellations across the GTA to keep you in the know if you should stay home in your flannel onesie, hide under the covers, and pray to the weather gods for some sun-saturated sanctuary.

Airports

Pearson International Airport

The airport has announced that travellers should expect delays and cancellations throughout the day, and advise checking flights prior to heading to the airport today.  As of 6:30 am, approximately 207 out of 696 scheduled departing flights and 209 of 706 arriving flights were cancelled.  Air Canada said that it has revised its ticketing policy for customers who are currently booked on flights that are impacted by the poor weather conditions.  Customers seeking options to change their travel plans can do so without incurring any additional costs through the company’s online re-booking tool.

Billy Bishop Airport

The Toronto Island airport is also advising travellers that today’s weather may impact airport and flight operations.  The airport’s website suggests that all travellers check with their airline to receive flight status updates.

TTC Service

The TTC has advised that travellers allow themselves lots of extra time to get to work this morning.  Since a significant snow accumulation is on its way, service will likely be slower than usual across the city.

Other Alerts

The City of Toronto has advised all drivers to plan out their commute this morning ahead of time, allowing for extra time on the roads as snow, ice pellets, freezing rain, and high winds will cause for a messy drive to work.  The City recommends drivers reduce their speed on the road, use extra precaution (especially when approaching intersections), and watching for pedestrians and cyclists.

Toronto police are also reminding motorists to avoid blocking streetcar tracks on city streets.  City officials announced that this was a major issue during last week’s winter storm, when a number of vehicles were parked next to snow banks and not allowing streetcars to pass.

Salting and plowing operations on sidewalks are commencing throughout the city today at 9:00 am.  Sidewalks with large accumulations of snow are expected to be completed by approx 3:00 pm, while those that have a small dusting (I'll believe that those exist when I see them) will be finished by 9:00 pm.

Salting operations have just commenced on the following trails, roads, highways, and separated bike lanes.  Salting and plowing is scheduled to continue throughout the remainder of the day:

Martin Goodman Trail

Humber Bay Waterfront Trail

Gardner Expressway

Salting operations on the Gardner Expressway began at 4:50 am today and will continue through the morning commute until plowing thresholds have been met.  The City of Toronto has advised that drivers please be extra patient on the roads today; slow down and give salting trucks the room they need to work.  Do NOT attempt to pass salters and plows.
