*We fully support the Canadian government’s initiatives to support refugees and asylum seekers. The opinions in these reviews do not necessarily reflect those at Narcity Canada.
With a large influx of refugees coming into Canada in the past year, it seems that one Toronto hotel has stepped up to provide temporary residence to refugees in need of housing, a decision that we support along with supporting Canada's response to the global refugee crisis.
Unfortunately, some guests at the Toronto Radisson East don't fully agree. While they may not be against refugees in general, they are sharing their stories from their recent stays at the Radisson and they are pissed.
On the popular travel website, Trip Advisor, people have been using the review section to warn potential guests that the Radisson in Toronto is being used to house refugees and according to their reviews, the atmosphere of the hotel and the quality of service have gone way down because of it.
Almost 25% of the hotel's reviews on the site are either poor or terrible, which amounts to over 200 reviews. Posts from as recent as today have used words like dangerous, terrible, and more negatively (and inaccurately) used the term "illegals" to describe the refugees being housed at the hotel.
A big complaint from people staying there is that the refugees allegedly crowd the lobbies, with children running around everywhere, and people begging for money or apparently trying to rob the guests.
Even guests who are in support of the Radisson housing refugees still stay they wouldn't have stayed there if they had known the situation, just out of concerns like noise level, crowding, and extremely long elevator waits. They have also said that it is not worth the $125+ per night they paid to stay there.
The Toronto Sun reached out to the Radisson for comment and, while they wouldn't confirm that the hotel is housing refugees, they did say they have a number of long-term guests staying there.
