Despite being a Swedish company, IKEA in Toronto is having a massive Chinese New Year feast this weekend. The official Chinese New Year takes place on Tuesday, February 5th while the IKEA in North York is celebrating on Saturday and Sunday with a special meal at their restaurant.
The event will feature a special Chinese inspired meal including stir-fry and spring rolls, at a discounted price of $8.99. On top of that, the restaurant is also holding a special Lion Dance and a show complete with traditional Chinese drumming and a gong.
After the ceremony, they will also be handing out a number of lucky red envelopes as part of another Chinese New Year tradition. In China, the envelopes usually contain money and are given as a New Years gift. IKEA hasn't revealed what kind of gifts will be in the red envelopes they give out this weekend, but everyone will have some kind of gift in it.
The North York store is the only GTA location having a special meal but they aren't the only IKEA in Canada having a celebration. Others in the GTA are also offering special discounts and promos for the Chinese New Year as well.
For example, the IKEA out in Richmond, BC is also having a special Chinese New Year meal including dim sum for only $8.99 as well.
Meanwhile, back here in the GTA, the Etobicoke IKEA is having a massive sale to celebrate. Their Chinese New Year flyer advertises deals on red napkins, placemats, and candles, bamboo plants and Asian inspired dishes.
Their sales even include a stuffed pig for only $7.99. This is to celebrate the fact that the upcoming Chinese New Year will be the year of the pig.
In the Chinese tradition, every year is assigned an animal based on the lunar calendar and the Chinese zodiac. This year that is ending has been the year of the dog.
The Chinese New Year is on February 5th, but celebrations at IKEA North York will be on February 2nd and February 3rd, both of them starting at 11:00 AM.
