We were often warned about the perils of playing too much video games, but one 11 year-old really took it too far.
Saturday night a car was seen driving erratically on Ontario's Highway 400 just north of Toronto. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt of the OPP Highway Safety Division stated that they received police reports roughly after 11pm on Saturday, November 26th of a vehicle that was 'all over the highway'. Drivers called in reporting what they believed to be an impaired driver. Little did they know it was actually an 11-year old boy that stole his parents car after playing the car chase video game, Grand Theft Auto.
The boy was going north on Highway 400 when he exited at King Road and then got back on the highway and then went south. At this time the OPP tried to pull the boy over. The GTA fan was driving about half the speed limit, stopped as the officer got out to talk to him, and then took off again. The boy then proceeded to drive at 120km/h until a second officer showed up and boxed in the car.
“(He) had just been finishing playing Grand Theft Auto at home and wanted to find out what it was like driving a car,” Schmidt said. For those of who are unaware, GTA is a video game series focused on car theft and high-speed driving.
Thankfully, no one was hurt during this 11-year-old's joy ride, even through the consequences could have been dire. No charges have been laid, with the police returning the child home and leaving the punishment up to his parents, who were asleep during the incident.
