Over 15 Streets Are Shutting Down As Part Of A "High Severity Closure" In Downtown Toronto This Weekend
The streets will be closed for tree lighting ceremonies and the annual parade.
The city of Toronto is getting an early Christmas present this year - a weekend of road closures. The city has been gifted with a number of different road closures this week, meaning Toronto traffic is going to be a nightmare.
There is a silver lining though. While the closures will be a headache if you are trying to drive through or to parts of the city this weekend, it's all because of Christmas.
The biggest of the closures is on Sunday, November 18th. Starting at 5:00 am, at least 15 different Toronto streets are going to be closed or blocked off in what's been labelled as a very high severity closure. The reason for this massive traffic block is actually really good though. It's the annual Santa Claus Parade.
Santa and the rest of the parade will be making their way through the city streets starting at 12:30 pm on Sunday. To account for the parade, set up, and clean up, the following streets will be closed at some point during the day.
- Bloor St W from Ossington to Christie and from Christie to Avenue
- Bremner St from York to Lakeshore
- Front St from Jarvis to Sherbourne and from Yonge to Jarvis
- Lower Jarvis St from Front to the Esplanade
- Queen's Park and Queen's Park Cresent
- University Ave from College to Wellington and from Wellington to Front
- York St from Front to Bremner
- Wellington St from University to Yonge
- Yonge St from Wellington to Front
- Queen Quay E, lane closure from Lower Jarvis to Parliament
Along the parade route, all of the road closures will be wrapped up between 2 pm and 6 pm. That's not the only closure this weekend, though.
Another Christmas event is shutting down Toronto streets this weekend too. This time it's the annual Christmas tree illumination ceremony. Though not as severe, the ceremony at Yonge and Dundas square means 2 days of road closures.
Dundas Square from Yonge to O'Keefe will be closed completely on Friday, November 16th for 12 hours from noon to midnight. Those same streets will be closed again from 12:00 pm to 10:00 pm on Saturday, November 17th. Yonge Street will also be closed that day between Shuter and Dundas from 3:00 pm to 9:00 pm.
The actual Tree Lighting at Yonge and Dundas square is from 5:30 to 7:30 pm on Saturday. The event will also feature live music, a holiday dance performance, and a holiday sing-along.
Other streets in the city will be closed this weekend for construction, like Adelaide St from Shepperd St to Bay St on Friday night. The street closures will also affect TTC routes, especially during the Santa Claus Parade.
