A St. James Town landlord is under pressure this week as the Toronto rental management company undergoes an “inspection blitz” following a series of power failures at several buildings. 240 Wellesley Street East is the latest downtown high-rise owned by the landlord to go without water or power, and residents will continue to live without the basic living necessities for the next 24 hours as investigators look into the cause of the outages.

Mayor John Tory first announced a series of inspections this past week after several incidents of power failures were reported to have affected numerous of St. James Town buildings. "This lack of preventative maintenance is unacceptable, and it needs to stop,” Tory stated according to 680 News.

650 Parliament Street, 280 Wellesley Street, 260 Wellesley Street, and 240 Wellesley Street East have all suffered a myriad of power issues which have left thousands of tenants stranded. A third-party company has been hired to assist by the management company and will provide residents with bottled water and snacks to help them cope with the outages.

A spokesman for the management company spoke with CP24 today to claim that the ongoing investigation at 240 Wellesley was looking into issues that supposedly went unnoticed during the company’s standard maintenance cycles.

Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam has also addressed the pressing issue and will sit down with tenants of the buildings which were affected by the electric disaster after their landlords failed to inspect the ageing structures properly.

At the moment, residents of 240 Wellesley Street East are being offered shelter by the close-by Wellesley Community Centre which has become a hotspot for stranded tenants of the St. James buildings. The centre offers residents the ability to take a shower and charge their electronic devices.
