If you are heading downtown today or tomorrow you may want to leave early. Toronto traffic will be a mess this weekend due to three high impact road closures and several other closures around the city.
There are several reasons for roads to be closed in the city, but for the most part, there are two main closure categories, construction and events. This weekend in Toronto we are lucky (or unlucky) enough to have both. Beside from the categories, each closure is also given a level based on its severity or the impact it will cause. Out of the eight closures happening this Family Day long weekend three of them are listed as high severity.
Those biggest closures are all due to construction. The first is an ongoing closure on The Queensway Lane. The eastbound lane has been closed since November 12nd from Parkside to Claude. This closure will last until Thursday, February 28.
The other two high impact closures are both on Bloor Street and are in effect for this weekend only. All day today and tomorrow, Bloor Street East will be closed from Sherbourne to Huntley for a crane lift. The other Bloor Street closure lasts from today until Monday between Yonge and Balmuto streets, also due to construction.
As for the other five closures, those are all a moderate severity, so it will have less of an impact but will still impact your travel if you need to go in these areas.
Three of those less severe closures are ongoing construction projects impacting York Street, Cresent Road, and several ramps and roads around Kipling.
The final two closures are actually due to events rather than construction. The first will be happening tonight when the Arkells take the stage at Toronto's Scotiabank arena. Bremner will be closed from Lower Simcoe to Lakeshore and York will be closed from Front to Lakeshore between 10-11 PM.
The second will happen Monday when the Marlies play at Scotiabank Arena. In that closure, all the same streets from the Arkells closure will be affected again between 5:30 and 6:30 PM.
Fortunately, there are no scheduled subway closures on the TTC this weekend but some bus routes will be impacted by these road closures this weekend and will be detoured because of it.
