Recent polls in Toronto's municipal election, which takes place on October 22, suggest that John Tory has a big lead right now. However, thanks to previous elections in the US and in Ontario where the results didn't line up with what was projected, people have become super hesitant to trust the polls.
Beyond that, while the polls place John Tory in a pretty big lead, Twitter tells a completely different story. On social media, Torontonians are showing a lot of support for Faith Goldy, who's been called Ontario's Donald Trump, and it's concerning.
Faith Goldy is running for mayor of Toronto in next week's election, which takes place on October 22nd. Unlike the rest of the candidates, though, she has been ousted from debates. Media networks like Bell and Rogers also refuse to run her campaign ads after receiving an influx of requests from viewers to keep them off the air.
Where she has been getting a lot of coverage, though, is on Twitter. Toronto locals, Ontario residents and even people from other parts of Canada have been sending her praise and support on social media.
Faith Goldy, an excellent candidate for Toronto mayor, pro Rule of Law, pro Make Canada Safe Again, pro balanced budget, &...BEST of all, Pro Western Civilization and a fighter for our values. @FaithGoldy will not be silenced. https://t.co/uqkeaUjm7i— Steve King (@SteveKingIA) 17 October 2018
As a Canadian, I welcome this intervention into our politics, sir! pic.twitter.com/Xk12OyqryT— White_Awake (@WhiteAwake1) 17 October 2018
After seeing a number of election tweets over the past few weeks, even in response to new articles about other candidates- especially the two front-runners John Tory and Jennifer Keesmaat - the majority of people seem to be shutting down other candidates and responding in favour of Goldy.
Hey CBC? John does not have a lead!!! Faith is the leader and with brains to lead Toronto!— Mona M (@MuteSwanTruth) 16 October 2018
You along with the rest of media have been ignoring her! The people will speak next week.
Please vote for Faith!!!
Modernity would include freedom of speech, and @FaithGoldy— mark mitchell (@mitchmjc) 15 October 2018
#FAKENEWS - TYRANT TORY is bedfellows with BELL MEDIA and ROGERS as a stockholder - DOUBLE STANDARD using media to block #FaithGoldy from advertising or debating in a - free democracy?! GET OUT AND VOTE FOR FAITH! Media/Political bias and corruption against @FaithGoldy MUST END! pic.twitter.com/hp9927NlUh— Ed Lennox (@webelievechurch) 17 October 2018
What makes Faith Goldy a concerning candidate, and what's earned her the comparisons to Donald Trump is that she has aligned herself with the US President by proudly wearing a Make America Great Again hat. She has also publicly supported him, which is also reflected in her own personal views.
Faith Goldy has been called alt-right and a white nationalist. She is known for starting riots at Canadian campuses and has even been banned from some companies. Beyond that, she has previously expressed anti-immigration and white supremacist views.
She announced her run for mayor in July and has been campaigning against John Tory and Jennifer Keesmaat, among the other candidates, since.
Whether you believe the polls or the people on Twitter, the election on October 22nd will determine once and for all who Toronto truly supports.
