The upcoming massive skating rink under Toronto's Gardiner Expressway just got even bigger, and it's not even open yet!
Toronto City Council approved an additional $500,000 toward The Bentway project to expand the urban skating rink farther east toward Bathurst St.
Since the plans for this year-round space include features like a live performance area, dog park, and areas for a marketplace, the expanded multi-purpose space will now have more room for activities in the community.
But even with all this additional funding, Coun. Joe Cressy who advanced the motion in council, still thinks the $24-million-total-funding is not enough money. "What we ought not to do is wait 30 years until we have all the funding," he said on Friday.
But given the excitement in the city surrounding the unveiling of The Bentway for the season on December 6th, Toronto doesn't want to wait one month, let alone 30 years for a project like this to launch.
As previously reported, The Bentway is well underway to reaching its January 6th opening date. Construction crews are currently wrapping up the Bentway’s 220-metre ice trail, which spans from the Fort York Visitors’ Centre, east of Strachan, to Bastion St. near June Callwood Park.
