Toronto's Wild Weather Continues With Thunderstorm Warnings And Up To 9°C Friday Morning

Toronto's freezing rain storm will be followed by even wilder weather patterns this week.

Based on the extensive warnings we were given, it seems like Toronto got off pretty easy with yesterday's freezing rain storm. Environment Canada issued a new weather alert just before 5:00 AM Thursday morning about freezing drizzle in the Toronto area. But, as far as rollercoaster weather patterns forecasted for the GTA, freezing drizzle is just the beginning.

Meteorologist Jill Taylor of 680 NEWS said at 4:30 AM this morning that the GTA is in for not only freezing drizzle, but possible thunderstorms and extremely erratic temperature swings.

"Freezing drizzle advisory continues for GTA (Feb7) brief period of freezing rain over higher elevations before changing to rain," she wrote. "High 5 late this eve for Toronto, up to +9°C early Fri then falling. Don’t be surprised by odd thunderstorm tonight".

Environment Canada warned of possible Thursday thunderstorms in their freezing rain advisory issued on Wednesday. "In the wake of this weather system, strong westerly winds with gusts in the 60 to 80 km/h range may be possible tonight into Friday," it read, along with possible evening thunderstorm activity.

However, if we do climb to a high of 9°C Friday morning, the warmup will be short-lived. According to The Weather Network, Friday's high will drop to around -4°C, feeling closer to -13°C with the windchill. Plus, the "huge temperature swing into spring-like values" will cause even icier conditions as the thaw begins to freeze over, The Weather Network reports.

Meanwhile, parts of northern Ontario are in for up to 40 cm of snow by Friday. "We'll likely see a heavy swath of 20-40 cm of snow through areas north and east of Lake Superior," warns TWN's Matt Grinter. "Sault Ste. Marie will approach 15 cm, but switches to a bit of ice pellets and even freezing rain."
