Travellers rejoice - Air Canada is officially launching a new layover program that will let people with connecting flights via Toronto to stopover for up to 7 days without being charged additional airfare fees.
Back in 2015, Air Canada put the program on trial to see its potential. Toronto Tourism later became interested in their initiative and is now funding the program for 2016.
The program itself was inspired by a similar stopover program launched in the 60's by Icelandair, which allowed people flying from North America to Europe to spend their layover in Reykjavik for a couple of days at no additional charge. The program proved successful as Reykjavik's tourism experienced a massive boom.
Air Canada is hoping to bring to Toronto the same results with the implementation of this program. Americans are the airline's target consumer, as they might enjoy the convenience of Toronto being relatively nearby as well as the exchange rate that works in their favour.
