Happy February, friends! We're officially a month into 2016 now, and that means a brand new list of fun free things to do in the city. From free flicks to cool art exhibitions to cultural festivals, there are a whole bunch of great things to do this month. There's even a David Bowie dance party happening (say what?!) Be sure to check 'em all out!
1. The Silence of the Lambs @ The Royal Cinema
Hannibal Lecter is definitely one of the creepiest fictional serial killers to have ever existed. If you feel like having nightmares tonight, celebrate the 25th anniversary of The Silence of the Lambs with a free screening at the Royal Cinema. It's happening February 1st and the first 100 people get free popcorn!
2. Art Exhibitions @ The Power Plant
Looking for cool new art to take Instagram photos of? The Power Plant is currently featuring four new exhibitions which include film, photography, sound, moving image, and installations by four different artists.
3. Lego & Lagers @ Gladstone Hotel
Feel like a kid again and make some lego masterpieces. I went with my boyfriend and he told me "we'd be awesome 2-year-olds", and you could be too. Legos & Lagers is happening every Tuesday at the Gladstone Hotel.
4. BOWIE (Let's) Dance Party @ Burdock
Put on your red shoes and dance the blues at this mega dance party celebrating the music of and paying tribute to the late David Bowie.
5. Kuumba @ Harbourfront Centre
From February 5th to 7th, take part in Toronto's longest running celebration of Black History Month. One thing to definitely check out at the festival: Black Like She, an all-female comedy showcase.
6. DJ Skate Nights @ Natrel Rink
Skate and dance along to tunes spun by a mix of talented French Caribbean DJs. It's much more fun than your typical skating session. Join in on the fun February 6th.
7. Shantell Martin: Drawing Toronto @ Coldstream Fine Art
But how much do you really love Toronto? Prove it by visiting the Drawing Toronto exhibition, featuring 6 new works on canvas by Shantell Martin. See it for yourself February 6th to March 12th.
8. Fires @ Horseshoe Tavern
Get your fix of new music by local alt-rock band, Fires. They're playing at the Horseshoe February 9th.
9. (found) foot'-age shoot'-out: Selections from the Austrian Avant-Garde @ TIFF
If you feel like getting a little cultured, check out this free screening of Austrian avant-garde classics. Grab your tickets the day of the screening, February 9th.
10. Faces & Places Photography Exhibition @ Toronto Centre for the Arts
Are you more of a photography person? Check out Maha Munaf's Faces & Places photography exhibition. It's open February 10th to 24th at the Toronto Centre for the Arts.
11. LunarFest @ Harbourfront Centre
Gung hay fat choy and happy Lunar New Year! Celebrate Chinese, Korean, and Taiwanese New Year's traditions at the Harbourfront Centre on February 20th and 21st. There'll be lion dancing, fortune telling, Lunar Tea tasting, delicious food (including the amazing rice bowl pictured above), and much more.
12. Films of Abbas Kiarostami @ TIFF
Love watching foreign films? Check out films by Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami at TIFF. This month, Where is the Friend's Home? (February 25th), And Life Goes On (February 26th), and Through the Olive Trees (February 27th) are being screened.
