There's no better time to explore the city and take sweet Insta photos than during Doors Open Toronto. It's your chance to access over 130 architecturally, historically, culturally, and socially significant buildings all across the city for free. For those of you who've been to Doors Open in previous years, more than 30 of this year's participants are new for you to check out.
The theme for this year's Doors Open is "Re-used, Re-visited and Revised", and it's all about exploring the adaptive repurposing of buildings throughout Toronto's architectural history. Check it out May 28th to 29th and be sure to hashtag all your photos as #DOT16.
1. Thomas Fisher Rare Book Library
Forget the Toronto Reference Library – this is definitely the coolest library in Toronto. You'll feel like you're in a Harry Potter movie.
2. Bata Shoe Museum
All I have to say is... Shoes.
3. 401 Richmond Street West
This restored industrial building is gorgeous and filled with green. Throw on a hipster outfit and snap some #OOTDs and you'll have all your friends in awe.
4. Bridgepoint Health
Bridgepoint Health is an aesthetically stunning hospital and research centre. Not only is the building itself super picturesque, but so are these dancing sculptures by Canadian artist William Lishman.
5. Bergeron Centre for Engineering Excellence
It's no wonder this York University building is nicknamed the "Cloud". Built in 2015, it's one of the newer ones in this list. If you're tired of looking at photos of Ryerson's SLC all over your feed, here's a similar building to take photos of.
6. Design Exchange
Did you know Design Exchange was Canada's only museum dedicated to everything design? Now that you do, you can go check it out and take some fire pics.
7. Toronto Botanical Garden
No need to go all the way to Hamilton to see pretty waterfalls.
8. Bloor Street United Church
These doors are red-hot and ready for their close-up. In all seriousness, it's a gorgeous building worth having a place on your Instagram.
9. Spadina Museum
Revisit the 1920s and 30s at the Spadina Museum. The house and gardens are both extravagantly beautiful and will make you feel really fancy.
10. Campbell House Museum
You mean to tell me that that house on Queen and University isn't just sitting there?! Go forth and take awesome photos, my fellow Instagrammers.
11. Canada Life Building
Alas, this is the closest some of us will ever get to "rooftopping". #ViewsFromAWindow
12. Bridgepoint Administration Building
Otherwise known as the Historic Don Jail. You could totally recreate the Blair-and-Serena-on-the-MET-steps photos here.
13. Ismaili Centre
You've probably seen photos of this all over everyone else's Instagrams but that doesn't mean you can't have one on yours as well. P.S. it's just as pretty inside as it is outside.
14. Jing Yin Temple
Travel back to ancient China.
15. Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres
Remember how jaw-dropping the opera theatre (not to mention Julia Roberts) was in Pretty Woman? The Elgin and Winter Garden Theatres are waaaaay prettier than that. I had the pleasure of watching a concert here several years ago and it was f*cking beautiful.
16. QRC West
Built last year in 2015, the QRC West building is a modernization of an older historic building. It features both old and new elements so it has an urban rustic feel (my kinda feel). It looks very modern on the outside, but inside, there are actually older buildings within the building.
17. Black Creek Pioneer Village
#TBT to when we had to churn our own butter and take photos with daguerreotypes. Thankfully, we have iPhones now.
18. Billy Bishop Toronto City Airport
Now that there's a pedestrian tunnel, it's much easier to get sick CN Tower skyline pics from somewhere other than Polson Pier. The pedestrian tunnel itself is pretty Insta-wow, too. You'll be able to visit areas usually inaccessible to the public, including a viewing area to watch as planes take off and land.
19. Commerce Court North
In 1931, this was actually the tallest building in the British Empire. Crazy, inorite? Its traditional vaulted and gold-coffered ceiling is absolutely stunning and definitely Insta-worthy.
20. Knox College
This dreamy University of Toronto building gives Hogwarts Vibes inside and out.
