You don't need to go beyond Ontario's borders to have a tropical vacation. There are several fantastic beaches in the province that have warm, soothing sands and crystal blue waters for you to enjoy. One Ontario beach in particular has so many striking similarities to a tropical beach that it will make you feel like you jumped on a plane to some distant southern island.
Canatara Beach is a kilometre-long beach in Sarnia that stretches along the shore of Lake Huron near the mouth of the St. Clair River. It's one of the only 26 beaches in the country to be designated with official Blue Flag status for its dedication to water quality and safety. It really shows, too - the water is some of the cleanest and clearest in the province, and because it is relatively shallow, the water temperatures can get really warm.
Aside from swimming and sunbathing, there are several other great activities to participate in at Canatara beach. If you're into watersports, you can enjoy stand-up paddleboarding or even try out the wicked Wakeboard park nearby. If you're a nature lover, there's a nearby Carolinian forest with several trails that offer beautiful sights of over 52 types of trees, as well as over 200 unique bird species. And, if you're not feeling a beach day or a hiking day, you can always tour the beautiful art and history museums in the nearby town.
The beach is only 3.5 hours away from Toronto by car, so it's a perfect place to day trip to with family and friends. Aside from the 3000 feet of gorgeous sandy beach, there are several other things to enjoy in the area, including beach volleyball, mini train rides, a BMX bike track, playgrounds, an animal farm, picnic spots, and much more.
