We love our hockey, and subsequently the professionals who play it, but maybe they should steer clear of social or political issues. Case in point - while attending a recent Toronto Raptors event celebrating Nelson Mandela, when asked about his legacy, Maple Leafs goalie Jonathan Bernier referred to Mandela as "one of the most known athletes in the world." Poor guy even thought he played for the Leafs. Watch and cringe for yourself.
What makes this even more (or less) comical, is the fact the the Leafs' sister organization, the Toronto Raptors posted the video online for all too see. Needless to say, social media had a field day with the giant skate the Toronto netminder put in his mouth, and the clip was promptly taken down at the bequest of the Maple Leaf organization.
Bernier later apologized saying he felt "embarrassed", and that he got "flustered with the red carpet." Fair enough, people make mistakes, especially Leafs players, but you'd think he might have taken a moment to at least wiki Mandela before attending an event celebrating his life. Don't worry Bernier, you'll get 'em next time.
