A speech at a Rebel Media event Saturday night has landed a Canadian lawyer in some hot water. Now people from all over Canada are calling him out online for a distasteful and unfair comparison.
John Carpay, who is a Calgary based lawyer, made a speech about populism when he compared the LGBTQ+ flag to the swastika, a symbol used by Nazi's during World War II. The speech was made during the Rebel Media Live event hosted in Calgary on Saturday, November 10th.
Speaking at #TheRebelLive, John Carpay of @JCCFCanada just compared the rainbow flag to a swastika, and said that protecting LGBTQ rights is totalitarianism. In case you were wondering if they were bigots. #cdnpoli pic.twitter.com/jMdezFWUBs
During the speech, Carpay discussed how to beat the totalitarianism in today's world. He further stated that people need to "think about the common characteristics. It doesn't matter whether it's a hammer and sickle for communism, or whether it's the swastika for Nazi Germany or whether it's a rainbow flag, the underlying thing is a hostility to individual freedoms."
Carpay also compared the blag to the symbol of communism, a hammer and sickle. While the rainbow flag represents the LGBTQ+ community the Nazi swastika is outlawed in Germany due to its dark heritage. During World War II, Hitler and the Nazi party were responsible for killing 6 million Jewish people and thousands of homosexuals.
Now, Carpay is facing backlash online after his speech with many Canadians calling for him to be disbarred from practising law in Canada.
john carpay buddy how much crack do you smoke to compare gay people to nazis
@JCCFCanada John Carpay you are a disgusting excuse for a human being. I had relatives fight & die overseas to rid the world of Nazis like you. Please take your obtuse, myopic & maniacal self to an ice floe in the Arctic & stay there until global warming has its way with you.
Say goodbye to your career John Carpay.
John Carpay is trying to gaslight folks into thinking they were just confused, or misheard. This might pass as an excuse if he didn’t already have a long track record of trying to hurt LGBTQ2+ people. The UCP must kick him out of their party now, or wear this homophobia.#ableg
Carpay issued a statement on Sunday, explaining his words during the Rebel Media event. He states that his speech discussed both sides of totalitarianism and a free society.
The statement and apology read, "I unintentionally drew a broad comparison between the rainbow flag and the flags which bear the symbols of Communism and Nazism. I should not have done so, and I apologize."
While the Canadian lawyer may be claiming that his comparison was an accident, Canadians are not forgiving him. In fact, they're still ruthlessly calling him out over his statement.
Not Carpay’s intent to “broadly” equate the LGBTQ community with Nazis and Communists, but rather to do so more narrowly and pointedly? I’m afraid this clarification is rather less than clearing the air, but it does make clear where he stands.
The lawyer who compared LGTBQ rights to those of nazis is saying he did it by accident. Can you imagine we are supposed to believe that someone, a lawyer at that, compared LGTBQ people to nazis...by ACCIDENT?No?Watch the UCP try to convince you of that. 3...2....1....
Carpay is currently the president of the Canadian Justice Centre for Constitutional Freedoms. In his statement following the speech, the lawyer stated that "Fundamental freedoms need to be defended, regardless of where the attack is coming from."
