Calgary's First Ever African Fashion Week Is Happening Next Month

It's no secret that Calgary is an incredibly multicultural place, and is home to people from all different walks of life and backgrounds. The city definitely has the occasional event here and there to celebrate its diversity, but there's always more that can be done to introduce Calgarians to different cultures that exist within our home. People are really starting to recognize this, and 2019 has been a year full of fun festivals with even more events to come. African Fashion Week Calgary starts on November 2, 2019, and it will be an unforgettable experience.
For months now, creatives from Calgary's African community have been working hard to bring something new to the city — our first-ever African Fashion Week. The visionary behind the event is none other than local designer and blogger, @queenarewami.
The goal of the event, according to their website, is to "showcase and promote local [and] international African designers to the people of Calgary."
"Our aim is to provide a platform where upcoming designers, student designers, small/ medium/ large-sized African designers locally or internationally can promote their creative designs."
Apart from some unforgettable designs, the event will also showcase African dance, music, arts, and delicious food for patrons to try.
If this sounds like something you'd like to attend, be sure to clear your schedule for the evening of November 2. The event will be taking place from 4 to 9 p.m. on Saturday at Calgary's Highland Park Community Centre.
Tickets for the event are still on sale and will cost you just $30. This fee includes a red carpet, a performance from a variety of African creatives, an intermission with plenty of samples and vendors for you to enjoy, a second show with more talent, and of course, an after-party.
The designers featured in the show are from Calgary and other cities around Canada, and although they'll primarily be showing looks for women, some incredible men's garments will be included as well. The dress code for the event is "modern regal," so be sure to dress your absolute best!
African Fashion Week is just one of the many upcoming Calgary events that you'll want to check out. Be sure to grab a bite to eat or a drink at one of the city's amazing restaurants before heading out on your unforgettable weekend.
