Whether you like to lace up hockey skates or figure skates, getting out on the ice is one of the best perks of winter. Calgary's outdoor ice rink at Olympic Placa is about to open, which is something of an unofficial start to the holiday season in the city. Best of all, you'll be able to grab free skate rentals to kick off winter.

The rink will officially open for the season on Wednesday, November 20.

While the iconic rink is always free, you usually have to either bring your own skates or pay for a rental.

But since it's Grey Cup weekend, they'll be celebrating with free skate rentals over three days making this experience totally free for one weekend.

There's even a special Grey Cup logo painted underneath the ice right now just for the occasion. Grey Cup weekend will be crazy in Calgary and this is a chill way to join in the fun.

Winter in Calgary this year is going to be insane. Our favourite things to do like Zoolights are coming back along with new soon-to-be-favourites like the Noel Christmas Market.

Ice skating is definitely high on our Alberta winter bucket list this year.

Why not take advantage of the rink's opening and skate for free? That leaves you more money for important things like adventures and brunch.

There will be free skate rentals at the rink on Thursday, November 21 and Friday, November 22 from 4 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

On Saturday, November 23 you can get free skate rentals from 12 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. so you can hit up an early brunch and then skate in the afternoon.

Olympic Plaza is just one of half a dozen outdoor ice rinks run by the city of Calgary.

They should all hopefully be opening soon as we head into winter.

If you can't make it to the rink for one of the free skate days, then you can always bring your own or fork over $12 to rent skates.

It's a small price to pay for a few hours of clean, classic Canadian fun.
