Canada's First-Ever 'Dementia Village' Is Opening This Month (PHOTOS)

Last year, it was announced that Langley, BC would be the home to Canada's very first 'Dementia Village'. Since the announcement, the town has been under construction and is almost ready to open its doors. Fortunately, The Village has finally announced that it will be having its grand opening in July 2019. 

The Village is a senior's community that is specially designed for those who are suffering from Alzheimer's and dementia. It refers to a concept that was designed and implemented successfully in De Hogeweyk, Netherlands that allows those who are suffering from dementia or Alzheimers to live in a normal environment. 

According to CTV, this first Canadian village will feature cabins that are used for housing spread across five acres of land. The land is secured by a tight perimeter and there is only one way to enter and exit the village.  The village will have six cabins that house 12 to 13 people each and will also have a grocery store and other amenities around the space. There will be no stairs or elevators in any of the buildings which will ensure that the residents will not get lost or confused.

The reasoning behind these villages is to allow those who are suffering from dementia and Alzheimers to be able to live in a more normal environment with others who are also suffering from the same illness. 

Since the announcement of the construction of Canada's first 'dementia village', it's gained so much popularity that Providence has announced their plans for another dementia village in Comox, BC.

CTV states that the dementia village in Langley already has 55 pre-registered residents that are planning on living the village and that the 72 spots should be filled by the opening date. The base rate for one person to live in the village is $6,950 which does not include personal expenses such as toiletries. 

While the grand opening will be in July, the Village doesn't expect residents to move in until August to give them time to fully furnish the cabins and ensure that all staff is properly trained.
