Canadians Are Optimistic About The Future, Way More Than Any Other Country

The future can sometimes be a scary thing to think about but it turns out that Canadians aren't too afraid of the future. According to a new survey, a whole lot of Canadians are optimistic about the future. So if we've got nothing else, at least we've got our optimism!

The Global Optimism Survey looked at opportunity, mobility, and sustainability to find out just how optimistic the world is. And it turns out that Canadians are really optimistic about the future and know exactly what they want out of it, too.

The survey asked respondents from more than 20 countries from the ages of 18 to 64 how they felt about what life has in store for them.

"We developed the Global Optimism Outlook Survey to help us understand what the citizens of the world believe will shape a better future. People from around the world have spoken, and we are listening," said Reem Al Hashimy, UAE Minister of State for International Cooperation, in a press release.

Sixty-two percent of Canadians responded that they consider themselves optimistic which is higher than the global average of just 56%.

It's interesting to look at these results as it relates to age. In Canada, people over 40 are more likely to be optimistic than people aged 18 to 39. The younger age group is right at the global average of 56% but of the older age group, 65% of people are optimistic.

When it comes to creating future opportunities for people, Canadians believe that learning, knowledge-gathering, access to education, collaboration across borders and cultures, and spreading tolerance and inclusivity are the most important.

The study also created a wishlist of what people want from the future more than 30 years from now. And Canada's wishlist is focused on the environment, which is pretty different from what the world wants in general.

While worldwide 53% and 57% of people want free trade for everyone and access to resources respectively, those two things don't even make Canada's wishlist for the future.

What Canadians want the most for the future is plastic-free oceans (71%), access to education (67%), and sustainable architecture and infrastructure (62%).

Sixty percent of Canadians want universal clean energytransportation to be a reality in 2050.

According to the survey, Canadians believe that individuals and communities will play a big role in actually shaping the future by sharing knowledge and banding together to tackle issues.

Globally, nine in 10 people said that it's up to all of us to make the future better.

"The results show that we are more connected than we may believe. That dialogue, communication, and collaboration are essential, and that we are united in our desire to create a happier, more inclusive, cleaner planet," said Al Hashimy.

So basically, we're all in this together.
