Canadians Are Petitioning To Ban Chick-Fil-A From Expanding Into Canada, Here's Why

Chick-Fil-A, America's beloved fast food chicken joint, announced that they'll soon be opening their second Canadian location in Toronto. Chick-Fil-A opened their first Canadian restaurant in 2014, at Calgary's International Airport. Four years later, Canada's preparing to welcome the fast food chain to Ontario.

But, a large group of Canadians are far from thrilled at the news. Chick-Fil-A has been at the centre of same-sex marriage controversy for years. The restaurant allegedly supports anti-gay organizations, and has donated millions of dollars to them. The company's CEO, Dan T. Cathy, has spoken publicly about his negative views on same-sex marriage.

Chick-Fil-A has since publicly apologized and changed their policies since the controversy, which began in 2012. But, many Canadians refuse to forgive and forget.

A petition called "Chick-Fil-A: Stay Out Of Canada" has over 46,000 signatures. The petition was started back in 2014 when the Calgary restaurant first opened. They only need 3,600 more signatures to reach their goal.

"Would you like your fried chicken with a side of homophobia?" the petition reads, "That's what's on offer at the Calgary International Airport, where notoriously anti-gay restaurant Chick-fil-A has just opened its first Canadian branch."

"The fast-food giant is one of the largest privately-held restaurant chains in the US, but its public image took a nose-dive in 2012 with revelations about its anti-gay stance. Since then, some new US branches have been prevented from opening," says the petition, "Chick-fil-A is clearly worried about a backlash. So let's give it one!"

It isn't clear whether or not the petition has any power over Chick-Fil-A's expansion into Canada. But, by spreading awareness, Canadians can choose not to support the restaurant and its history of endorsing discrimination.
