On Monday afternoon, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Canada jumped to 407. In response, the country’s top public health official is urging Canadians to avoid gatherings of over 50 people, and to stay at home wherever possible. These gatherings could include bars, restaurants, daycares and schools.
Providing an update on the COVID-19 situation in Canada on Monday, Dr. Theresa Tam explained that now is the most important time for Canadians to practice self-isolation.
She noted that social distancing, in order to flatten the curve of the virus, was about increasing physical distance from others. This means avoiding close contact where possible, in order to stop germs spreading.
During Monday's conference, Dr. Tam suggested Canadians should avoid situations where more than 50 people could be present, and try to work remotely if possible.
Sharing this advice, she explained, "Right now is a very important period of time."
She added, "We are in a critical period," before going on to note that the number of cases in Canada jumped, from 170 on Thursday, to more than 400 on Monday.

Dr. Tam's advice comes as the Prime Minister announced stronger action from the federal government in relation to the COVID-19 outbreak.
Also speaking on Monday, Justin Trudeau stated, "As the virus continues its spread, we've decided to take increasingly aggressive steps to keep you and your family safe."
New plans include restricting entry into Canada, introducing mandatory isolation for some travellers, and preventing those with symptoms from flying.
Over the weekend, the number of COVID-19 cases in Canada almost doubled, prompting health officials to speak out.
Dr. Tam simply stated, "We all need to act now. COVID-19 is a serious public health threat."
