You may have heard of the expression "it goes down in the DM" and boy, does it ever. While the song was popularized by Yo Gotti in attempts to win the affection of Angela Simmons, it's still to be determined whether or not it did go down in the DM for the rap star. Nonetheless, we do have some serious tips for you to try and crack into someone's Insta-heart for real.
In order to successful slide into the DM's, you need a certain level of smoothness. It can definitely be hard to master the art of the DM slide, but once you have? It's open on Insta. It's important to remember that even with a great line, Instagram is a more superficial platform, so don't let some R-bombs discourage you. You could even land a long term bae from a practiced sliding approach. Let's dive in, shall we?
1. Public or Private
If you want to successfully hit someone up, your profile should be open. Unless you have the world's hottest display pic, someone will rarely hit follow or even hit you back in the DM if they don't know what you look like or what your vibe is.
2. Make sure your feed is looking fresh
Has it been a while since you've posted something fire? You might want to rethink that before sliding into someone's DMs. No one wants to scroll back months and months to see whether or not they'd be attracted to you.
3. Be realistic
I really don't think Kim Kardashian will ever catch a glimpse at your DM. This includes people with crazy high follower counts, that are surely being swarmed with DMs every goddam day. Whether you're looking for a quick hook-up or an actual date, make sure the person you're hitting up is somewhere in your field. Ex. A swimsuit model from Vegas will not grab a drink with you at Cactus Club. (Unless you are actually Drake and can fly a bish out.)
4. Do your Insta-homework
Don't just slide in blind with a "Hey mami" - because we all know where that's going. Nowhere. Check out their feed, what they're into, where they've been recently. If they posted a picture at a club, as if they like it there. A shot from a concert? "How were your seats?" Having some sort of topic or in gives you a much better chance at a response than a rejection.
5. Go in with a GIF
Our attention spans are shorter than ever nowadays. A picture or a GIF can be an easy way to grab someone's eye and make them laugh. Our vote? Anything with baby animals, viral memes or Asahd Khaled.
6. Stay true to you
When online, it's easy to want to go in with a big personality that may not be who your are off-screen. The more genuine you are, the more likely people are to respond to you. Being confident is attractive, but being presumptuous or overly sexual is enough to turn anyone off. After the initial breakthrough DM of a message or two, try some thoughtful questions about what you found through your research. Maybe this dude likes to golf. If so, "So what's the best course in Toronto for me to actually make par?" Or if your girl is a chef? "Top 3 dinners in the city?"
7. Practice practice practice
Just as not every person you walk up to in a bar is going to be into you, not everyone you DM will be into you either. But that doesn't mean there aren't people that would be stoked to get a message from you! And why wouldn't they?! You're so fking cute. So just remember to take things lightly and have fun with reaching out to people. Like I said, Instagram is super superficial at the root of it and beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So keep sliding in and practicing your skills until you land the bae of your dreams. And if not, I guess Tinder's a pretty real thing now?
