The law library at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor is a step out of the real world and a huge leap into the world of magic. Tour guides will often tell prospective students that the Harry Potter filmmakers considered using this building in the movie. Even though that's not true, it just takes one look inside to see how that rumor got started.
This historic building, formally known as the Legal Research Library, opened in 1931 and was modeled after impressive Gothic-era structures.
The main attraction is the Reading Room. It is the most breathtaking sight in the law quadrangle, which is made up of several buildings belonging to the law school.
It's ten stories tall and has massive stained glass windows lining the entire room. The windows display the seals of many prestigious universities around the world, to show how serious the scholars at this place are.
Even if you're not putting in time studying hardcore for exams, this place is definitely worth a visit if you're craving a Harry Potter fix but don't want to travel too far.
Over the years, the library had grown dark and dingy and about a decade ago, the library was remodeled. The most important undertaking was making it easier to read in the reading room!
They cleaned the gorgeous teal and gold ceilings and replaced the old lightbulbs with ones that washed the room with a soft light that made the library seem like it was glowing from within.
One half of the reading room is open to students and the public and the other half is reserved for law students at the university.
The beautiful reading room is just one attraction of this group of buildings. If you step out of the front doors of the Reading Room, you'll find a large patch of grass that's one of the most idyllic spots on campus.
In the early spring, it's an enchanting spot to smell the fresh air and rest for a moment to appreciate the changing season. During the summer, you'll be able to take a breather on a bench while groups of friends throw around a frisbee and dogs run around enjoying the sunshine.
Because of its ethereal beauty, t's an extremely popular spot for students to take graduation photos and for alumni to have engagement photoshoots and you might run into some recent graduates on your visit.
