An "Aladdin" Sequel Starring Ontario Actor Mena Massoud Could Be In The Works

It seems that Disney isn’t finished exploring the “whole new world” that hit theatres back in May of 2019 because a Disney’s Aladdin sequel is reportedly in the works. The live-action remake of the 90s cartoon hit the box office by storm last year. Variety reports that it earned a whopping $900 million in box office sales by early July. The film starred Will Smith as well as some new faces in Hollywood, like Toronto’s very own Mena Massoud as Aladdin himself.

According to Variety’s sources, the sequel is still very much in its beginning stages. The last six months have reportedly been spent figuring out how to execute a second installment.

However, the outlet also claims that original producers Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich are looking to offer stars Will Smith, Mena Massoud and Naomi Scott their originals roles, but are holding off on establishing contracts until a script is confirmed.

Aladdin was Massoud's Hollywood breakout film and this possible role reprise would mark only his second blockbuster film.

Before his big break, IMDb reports the 28-year-old actor was living in Toronto right outside of where he grew up in Markham, Ontario. Dreshare says that his career started after graduating from Ryerson University in Toronto with a degree in theatre and drama.

He went on to work in smaller productions like Nikita and Saving Hope before Aladdin, according to IMDb.

In October of 2019, Massoud spoke to ET about the possibility of a sequel, where he told interviewers if there were to be one it wouldn’t be based on anything fans had ever seen before.

It looks like Massoud was on the right track because Variety’s source says this film will be solely based on original ideas.

The film will supposedly also be getting a box office release instead of heading straight to stream on Disney Plus like their upcoming addition to the Home Alone franchise.

No details about potential filming locations or a possible release date have been announced yet. Right now, you can watch the first Aladdin film on Disney Plus.
