Don Cherry As Conservative Party Leader Is Something His Supporters Want To See

Don Cherry may have lost his job at Sportsnet, but the former Coach’s Corner host still has plenty of supporters who think he should return. There are other supporters, however, who think that the Coach's Corner host should set his sights on bigger things. They think that Don Cherry should lead the Conservative Party.

An image shared on Reddit in the r/metacanada subreddit imagined what Cherry's campaign poster would look like. It includes the man himself wearing one of his trademark colourful suits (this one is blue and covered in maple leaves, very Conservative).

Don Cherry has never been afraid to make his opinions about anything and everything public, even during a television segment ostensibly about hockey. As CBC documented, Cherry has a long history of sharing his political opinions on the air.

In 2003, Cherry criticized Canada's decision to stay out of the Iraq War. In 2010, Cherry attended Rob Ford's mayoral inauguration in a bright pink suit. While he was there, he called cyclists "pinkos" and said, "put that in your pipe you left-wing kooks."

Cherry has also denied that climate change is real, and called those who believe in it "cuckaloos."

Beyond the Reddit post, Cherry's supporters have expressed their desire to see him take on the role of Conservative Party leader on Twitter.

"Ditch Andrew Scheer. Don Cherry should check out political life. The conservative party needs a Canada first leader. I can't think of a better man for the job," wrote @OwynSnow.

"Don Cherry, you're the man ! Don, please consider running for the Conservative Party of Canada we need a real leader," wrote @edward876543211.

Many others called for Cherry to take over the CPC leadership.

Don Cherry was fired from Sportsnet for controversial comments that appeared to be targeted at immigrants using the term "you people."

Cherry has denied that he was talking about immigrants during his comments about wearing poppies on Remembrance Day.

A petition to get Don Cherry back on Sportsnet started by Western Standard on Change.org has already garnered over 200,000 signatures, surpassing its original goal.
