Donald Trump's Lawyer Is Suing Buzzfeed

Is this the end of Buzzfeed as we know it?
Donald Trump's Lawyer Is Suing Buzzfeed

By now most of us are sick of President Donald Trump and the media frenzy that follows him around. From his Twitter fingers taking us steps closer to nuclear war to what looks like his inability to sing the national anthem, every move he makes seems to get documented and stir up some sort of trouble.

Now the 45th (and current) President of the United States, is maybe for the fight time being dragged into a brawl that he didn't start. Michael Cohen, Trump's personal lawyer is picking a fight with the internet media company Buzzfeed and it seems like Trump is staying out of the drama (for now anyways).  The lawsuit surrounds an article Buzzfeed News published in January 2017 of the Steele Dossier (intelligence documents) that alleged that Trump was working closely with Russia during his presidential campaign to interfere with the election and swing things into Trump's favour.

The dossier is a collection of 17 intelligence reports written by former British intelligence officer Christopher Steele (hence the name Steele dossier). The reports are filled with unverified allegations about Trump and his lawyer, Michael Cohen, and paints the pair as a key players in Russia's alleged interference in the election.

Trump took to twitter to denounce the dossier and even to call it fake news but Michael Cohen has opted to take legal action against Buzzfeed, suing them for publishing “false and defamatory” claims that lead to “harm to his personal and professional reputation, current business interests, and the impairment of business opportunities.”

Enough is enough of the #fake #RussianDossier. Just filed a defamation action against @BuzzFeedNews for publishing the lie filled document on @POTUS @realDonaldTrump and me!

The publishing of the dossier by Buzzfeed did result in an investigation that proved some of the claims false and others true. With that in mind, BuzzFeed News says it plans to fight the charges.

A spokesperson at Buzzfeed News told Vox, “The dossier is, and continues to be, the subject of active investigations by Congress and intelligence agencies. It was presented to two successive presidents, and has been described in detail by news outlets around the world. Its interest to the public is obvious. This is not the first time Trump’s personal lawyer has attacked the free press, and we look forward to defending our First Amendment rights in court.”

While it seems unlikely that Michael Cohen will win the lawsuit, we hope this isn't the end to the media powerhouse Buzzfeed.
