Ladies and gentlemen, fall is coming! The leaves are turning orange, the evenings are getting darker, halloween costumes are in the stores, and pumpkin spice has made a comeback. I repeat: Pumpkin spice has made a comeback! In honour of all things fall, and all things pumpkin spice, I took a trip to Tim Hortons to try every snack on their new fall menu, and this is what I honestly thought …

Firstly I should make it clear, I am not much of a ‘trier.’ Once I find something I like, whether it be a snack, a beverage, a boyfriend, I usually stick with it. Don’t change things up if you know what you like, is my motto. Stick with what you know! Change is dangerous! However, sometimes, in the name of honest journalism, one must step outside their comfort zone. One must venture into unknown realms. So, here I am. Trying something new.

On the the new Tim Hortons fall snack menu, ready for me to taste-test, there is the following: Pumpkin Spice Muffin, Pumpkin Spice Timbit, Pumpkin Spice Donut and Cookie Dough Brownie. I tasted them in a strategic order, starting with which one I thought would taste the worst. I started with the donut. I was correct to start with the donut.

Pumpkin Spice Donut

You know how sometimes you have a snack, that looks fairly average, but it ends up tasting so much better than you could have ever imagined? Well, this was not one of those. This tastes *exactly* how it looks. You don’t even need to put it in your mouth, your brain just knows. It is a little dry, a little pumpkin-y, and a little sugary on the outside. It literally is exactly what it is. It is pleasant but not life-changing. If you want a donut that has a pumpkin-spice vibe, this will hit the spot.

In an attempt to make the snacks look fancy, I took them home, plated all of the snacks up, and arranged them in what I thought was a baking-show-esque fashion. I quickly realized that these snacks are not made for plates. Even the Tim Hortons advertising campaigns don’t put them on plates. They look uncomfortable and awkward on plates. Eat them on a napkin.

Pumpkin Spice Timbit

I tried this second because, again, I thought it looked a little dry. It was just sort-of ok. I don’t know why you’d choose it over other Timbits, but if you really love pumpkin spice, then it will probably do it for you. It tastes almost healthy, like you could convince ‘that friend’ it was made from vegetables. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it tasted better than the donut, but that could just be because there was less of it to eat.

I was equally horrified and impressed at how yellow it was.

Pumpkin Spice Muffin

Ok, this is where things started to get exciting. This was good. When I took my first bite, I was pleased to discover it was moist, and was packed with flavour. The taste was similar to that of the donut, but the texture really added to the experience. I wasn’t expecting the Philly cream cheese filling. The dollop of cream cheese catapulted this muffin into true ‘potential’ zone. It was creamy, delicious and tasted like fall.

8.5/10

Cookie Dough Brownie

Ok, not to be dramatic, but this brownie will change your life. This brownie is indulgent, rich, tasty and everything you could want in a sweet-treat. Although the cookie dough isn’t raw, the texture was soft, with just the right amount of chew! This is the brownie you will need to carry you through winter. This brownie will be there for you when you need it.

However, sadly, there is bad news. It seems that not every single Cookie Dough Brownie is spectacular. I ordered two of these, one to test, one for a friend. They tasted completely different. The evil brownie was dry, crunchy and had hardly any cookie dough! It was a world-away from the delicious, chocolatey best friend that I enjoyed. So, it is a gamble. But, a gamble worth taking!

10/10

After trying all of the snacks on the new menu, I can officially confirm that there is potential out there. Despite looking considerably more like an actual pumpkin than when I started, I was pleased overall with the snacks and would even consider incorporating the brownie into my regular Tims order.

To conclude, try the brownie, pass on the donut, and NEVER use a plate.
