This North Carolina BBQ Joint Doubles As A Teeny-Tiny Airport
Watch the planes come in while you get your grub on.
When visiting North Carolina, getting some barbeque is on many people's to-do lists. Knowing which spot to go to for the best meal is the tricky part, but we've found a spot that has the experience to go along with your meal. This place to eat in North Carolina doubles as an airport and you'll have a show while you chow down on some barbecue.
Pik N Pig in Carthage, North Carolina is a down-home Southern joint that serves up some authentic BBQ, none of that fake stuff.
The food is cooked outside in a ginormous smoker that is fueled by no other than hickory.
The entire restaurant is aviation-themed, for the obvious reason of it also being a private airport. You'll see handmade hanging aircraft, wall hangings of planes and photos of visitors who have come and gone.
The tiny airport here is called the Gilliam-McConnel Airport and the only thing separating you from the runway is a stop sign with "ACTIVE RUNWAY DO NOT CROSS" written on it.
If you have a private plane or helicopter, this restaurant is pretty much like a drive-thru made just for you.
Whether you're looking for brisket, pulled pork or wings, this place has it all.
Many people rave about how great the BBQ pulled pork nachos and various platters are.
Before you leave, you must get the banana pudding for. You can take it to the back porch and sit on the bench while you watch the planes land and take-off.
Many pilots fly to this spot just for lunch or dinner because it's just that good.
The prices are just about as good as the food. Most items are, but you can get a large portion plate for just a few extra bucks.
Pik N Pig is open from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. on Sundays.
