14 Things To Do In Alberta That You Have To Add To Your Summer Bucket List
It's almost that time of year again! Summer is easily my favourite out of all the seasons because of the warm weather, long days, freedom from school, and the endless outdoor activities, of course. Because Alberta is known to suffer from brutal winters, when the sunshine comes around, you really want to take advantage of it!
Since we're supposed to have a long, hot summer in 2019, you'll need plenty of things to keep you busy through all the days ahead. Next time you and your friends are wondering what to do, take a look at this list! We've got everything from exploring Dinosaur Provincial Park to petting kangaroos at Cobb's Adventure Farm.
Go tubing at Red Deer's Discovery Canyon
What better way to spend a summer day than floating down the river in your swimsuit? Red Deer's Discovery Canyon is the best place to go - they even offer tube rentals for just $5, and a concession so you can grab some snacks after a day of floating!
Explore the Bowden SunMaze
Exploring the Bowden SunMaze, located on a cute organic farm, is the perfect way to end your summer. The flowers are in full bloom from Mid August-Mid September.
Watch the wildlife at Elk Island National Park
Many of Alberta's national parks are often overflowed with tourists, so if you're looking for something a little more lowkey, we recommend Elk Island National Park. It's a great spot to do some wildlife watching while you enjoy a picnic lunch, or simply get away from it all for a day.
Get some vegan eats at VegFest Calgary
Calgary's 3rd annual Veg Fest is happening on Saturday, June 15th at Shaw Millenium Park. The event is totally free to attend, although bringing a donation for the local food bank is highly encouraged. Be sure to pop by and try all the wonderful vegan treats you can get your hands on.
Go for a walk through Dinosaur Provincial Park
Personally, I think Dinosaur Provincial Park is one of the most slept on places in Alberta. Not only can you go hunting for ancient fossils, but you can also camp amongst the stunning hoodoos with your best friends!
Try your hand at Indoor Skydiving
Calgary will be saying hello to its first ever indoor skydiving centre this summer! iFLY will be opening its doors in Deerfoot City, so you and your friends can get your adrenaline pumping with a day full of windy fun.
Go camping in Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park
One way to guarantee yourself a good summer is to make sure you and your friends head out on a camping trip! There's plenty of amazing places in Alberta, but one of the best ones is Writing-On-Stone Provincial Park. With all the beautiful prairie views, you won't ever want to head back home.
Ride your bike through Edmonton's River Valley
Did you know that the largest urban park in Calgary can be found right in the city of Edmonton? There are over 160km of paths waiting for you to explore, laid out throughout 20 major parks. Make it your goal this summer to bike, hike, or walk through as many of them as you can!
Pet baby kangaroos at Cobb's Adventure Park
I don't even think I need to explain why you should want to do this one, but I will anyway. Cobb's Adventure Farm, which can be found in Calgary is home to so many amazing things, including baby kangaroos! They also have plans to open up a sunflower maze this summer, so if you don't feel like driving all the way to Bowden, you don't have to!
Have a photo shoot with friends at Peyto Lake
Look at those crystal blue waters! Can you think of anything more beautiful? With Peyto Lake being just a short drive away, especially for those of us who live in Calgary, it's the perfect place to improve on your photography skills with your closest friends.
Visit the incredible Lundbreck Falls
Although waterfalls aren't something that Alberta is known for, we do have a few, and they are seriously beautiful. You can find Lundbreck Falls approximately 25km NW of Pincher Creek. Be sure to make the drive at least once this summer - it's somewhere that every Albertan should see!
Spend a day at the Calgary Stampede
Would it even be an Alberta Summer bucket list if the Calgary Stampede didn't make an appearance?! Whether you're going for the concerts, food, rides, or booze, the Stampede is an exciting time of year for so many of us. Be sure to throw on your best Western wear and stay tuned for all the big concert announcements to come.
Relax in the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden
If you need to clear your mind and relax a bit, the Nikka Yuko Japanese Garden in Lethbridge is the best place to go. The gardens are beautifully maintained and will have you feeling tranquil and calm as soon as you walk in. They are a pretty popular tourist destination, but it's never too hectic.
Soak up the sun at Sylvan Lake
If you want to work on your tan, feel the sand between your toes, or spend a day out on the water, Sylvan Lake is calling your name! Of the few beaches in Alberta, Sylvan is one of the best because of the friendly folks who live in the area and the abundance of fun summer activities you can try out.
