Airbnb is an immensely popular and often much cheaper way of finding awesome accommodation when travelling. As the locations are commonly people’s actual homes and private properties, it is easy to find some really unusual and quirky properties- that can make your holiday or city break that much more exciting! However, for one Vancouver Island couple, a bizarre robbery during their Airbnb stay made their vacation nothing short of “disturbing.”
Kat and Rod Gordon, a couple from Vancouver Island, had booked a weekend away together at a downtown Edmonton Airbnb. After dropping off their belongings at the private Edmonton property last Sunday, the pair headed out to enjoy their Albertan city break. However, when the couple returned from their evening out, they found the property to be in a different condition than when they’d left.
Speaking to CTV News Edmonton, the couple says they first noticed that the lights had been left on, and metal music was blaring from the property, which was odd as they had turned off the lights and had not been listening to any music. Kat explained that they had initially assumed the property had been double booked and there were other holiday-makers inside the home.
However, upon further inspection, the Gordons noticed that some of their luggage and personal belongings were missing. Kat described the moment they found their bags had been unpacked and rifled through as “very disturbing.”
The couple was relieved to find that there was nobody else in the property, but were puzzled to find that the thieves had taken the time to take off their own clothes, and washed them in the washing machine! If this was not bizarre enough, the people who broke in also left a bowl of cigarettes behind, as well as a really strange, handwritten note.
According to the Gordons, the note read, “We are here! Today is the best day of the rest of our lives!”
Kat added that, while the note said it was one of the best days of the thieves' lives, it was one of the worst days of their own.
The incident was reported to local police and security footage showed a male and female, who were potential suspects. According to the Gordons, the pair were dressed “from head to toe, wearing our clothes.”
Kat Gordon added, “We were worried they might come back because … they had washed their own clothes in the washer. And the clothes were still there.”
The host of the Airbnb, who provided the couple with a full refund, said she changed the door code each time she has a guest and has “no idea how this could have happened.” She added, “It’s really upsetting.”
