An Edmontonian Was Just Caught Driving 200 km/h On The Wrong Side Of The Road

There have been so many wild driving stunts in Canada since the pandemic started, it's starting to look like Fast and Furious out there. This week, RCMP caught a potentially furious and certainly fast Edmontonian driver going almost double the speed limit. Even worse, he was driving on the wrong side of the road!

On Tuesday afternoon, May 12, RCMP in Leduc arrested a man in a BMW X5, who was driving over 200 kilometres an hour on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway.

Not only that, the man was driving "southbound in the northbound lane," and was dodging oncoming drivers by passing on the shoulder of the road.

According to a RCMP release shared with Narcity, when police gave chase, the man didn't stop and "continued attempts to evade arrest."

Edmonton Police Service's helicopter was then called in, and both the Wetaskiwin and Maskwacis RCMP units joined in to help.

Eventually, police report that the driver tried to avoid "a tire deflation device," by turning onto train tracks. Instead, "the vehicle tire disintegrated," local police explained.

The car was eventually stopped and the suspect surrendered to police. He was identified as 22-year-old Edmonton resident, Jean Sebastien Cadieux.

The man is in custody and will appear in court on Monday, May 25.

Police charged Cadieux with counts of dangerous driving, flight from police, operating a vehicle while prohibited, and failing to comply with a release order.

Ironically, the arrest happened right at the start of Canada's Road Safety Week. The week from Tuesday, May 12 to Monday, May 18 is dedicated to raising awareness and helping to make the nation's roads safer.

While police report there is "significantly less traffic on Alberta's roads" due to the pandemic, "impaired driving, distracted driving and speeding remain a problem across the province."

Alberta's not the only that's starting to look like Mad Max: Fury Road.

Just days earlier in Ontario, two teens were booked for going a mind-blowing 308 kilometres an hour down the highway, using the driver's dad's car!

"The Leduc RCMP reminds the motoring public that traffic safety is an RCMP priority," wrote police in their statement.
