A hot-spot that had lineups for days before its grand opening has officially been shut down by health authorities. Jollibee Edmonton has been ordered to close its doors by Alberta Health Services (AHS). The order was issued after AHS observed the restaurant breaking the social distancing guidelines related to the COVID-19 crisis.
The health officials confirmed the closure order in an email to Narcity. Sabrina Atwal, a spokesperson for AHS, said, "Jollibee in Edmonton was issued a closure order for failing to comply with social distancing requirements inside and outside the store."
She added that when businesses fail to meet these requirements, they have no choice but to shut them down.
Just days before the closure notice, on Friday, April 10, the store was written up for breaking a number of health violations.
Among these violations was the "careless use and storage of mixed sanitizer on both food and food-related items", the improper use of an ice bath, failing to properly heat food items, and others.
It's unclear at this time whether the four food violations were related to the closure order that's in effect at the moment.
AHS added that they are working with businesses to educate them about how they can maintain top-notch safety standards for both their staff and customers.
This is the only Edmonton location of the popular Filipino fast-food franchise. As the chain is new to Canada this year, the excitement was real when this location opened in August 2019.
Narcity has reached out to Jollibee for comment and we will update this story when we receive a response.
All restaurants in Alberta have been ordered to shut down dine-in services in light of the pandemic. Since, many have been doing delivery or pick-up instead.
On top of that, health and police authorities have been busy cracking down on anyone caught breaking public health orders.
From arresting people for deliberately coughing on essential workers to giving out fines to individuals holding gatherings in the street, it's safe to say the authorities have their work cut out for them.
Though one of Edmonton's hottest joints for fried chicken has shut down for an indefinite period of time, that certainly doesn't mean that you can't look to other options for the time being.
