This Hidden Spot In Ottawa Has 100% The Best Sandwiches In The City
The capital's best kept secret.
There are two types of people in this world: those who love sandwiches, extra salami, don't hold back on the cheese type of people, and those who want nothing to do with them. Well, I'm here to convince the skeptics!
Tucked away in the Byward Market is one of the capital's hidden gems, La Bottega Nicastro, otherwise known as La Bottega. Located on 64 George Street, this Italian store offers the best sandwiches in the ENTIRE city. Seriously, take it from someone who could eat a sandwich every single day of her life.
And they're no amateurs when it comes to food. La Bottega has been around since 1972 when the Nicastro brothers opened up their first store in Little Italy and soon expanded to Merivale Rd. Eventually, the younger generation of Nicastro's opened up their beloved downtown bottega (Italian for shop or boutique) in 1995.
Ok, so let's talk food. While La Bottega offers a range of delicious, homemade Italian food, their real winner is their mouth-watering deli sandwiches.
Their famous sandwiches are made to your liking and your exact specifications. You start by choosing from a variety of fresh Italian bread like focaccia or cirioli, then you choose as much meat as you want (my personal favourite is Italian ham and prosciutto), and then comes cheese (provolone, swiss or mozzarella), finally you choose your toppings!
Not only are these sandwiches absolutely worth trying, but they're also really cheap too! At just under $6, you'll leave with a full stomach and the satisfying conclusion that you just tried the best sandwich in the city.
Seriously look at how much meat they put in their sandwiches!!
Don't forget to pick up a can of San Pellegrino to wash down that delicious sandwich. In fact, La Bottega has plenty of Italian gourmets and drinks for you to discover, along with a deli bar, an impressive cheese section and all sorts of pastries and desserts like the famous Italian cannoli which tastes just like nonnas.
So next time you're taking a stroll down the Byward Market, make sure to stop by this remarkable little Italian store. They're open Monday, Friday and Saturday from 9am to 6pm, Thursday-Friday from 9am to 8pm, and Sunday from 10am to 5pm. For more information on this gem in the city, check out their website.
