One of my favourite go-to sushi rolls that I always order is yam tempura roll. If you're like me and you can't get enough of the crunchy stuff, then you're going to want to check out Kaneko Hannosuke. The famed Japanese tempura house opened in Vancouver in early 2020 and it's serving up the most heaping bowls of deep-fried heaven. Their signature Edomae-Tendon dish is a rice bowl topped with all kinds of tasty tempura. It's on their menu for $18.95, plus tax. That might be a lot to pay for just tempura, but consider that it's a heaping bowl. It could even be your only meal of the day! On top of a bed of rice, you can try tempura eel, squid, shrimp, green beans, plus a boiled egg with a gooey centre. The entire thing is drizzled in their signature savoury "secret sauce." Some ingredients come direct from Japan for maximum authenticity. Each bowl comes served beautifully. There's a massive piece of fried eel with each one that will make an eye-catching photo if you have to 'gram everything you eat. Whether you try and tackle the Tendon bowl on your own or with a friend, you're going to have a good crunchy time doing it. View this post on Instagram There's a new Japanese restaurant chain in town! I was excited the famous Kaneko Hannosuke tendon chain finally opened in Vancouver! I didn't get to try while in Japan, so I was really looking forward to try @kanekohannosuke.vancouver in Vancouver! . Edomae-tendon or their premium tempura bowl comes with conger eel, shrimp, squid, softboil egg and veggies. Their eel and other ingredients are straight from Japan. I really liked the conger eel. It was tender and didn't seem like it had a lot of bones. I was a bit surprised the tempura shrimp was not very crispy and kinda shall I say limp? My favorite was the sauce with the rice and of course the tempura poached egg with the rice. It rounds up close to $20 for the premium bowl but you are getting a giant piece of conger so it's not too bad for the price. . Swipe to see my failed attempt at picking up the egg to move it and punctured it instead. #eggporn . . . #vancouver #foodie #instafood #foods #instagood #vancity #vancityeats #foodstagram #vancouverfoodie #food #vancouvereats #yvr #yvrfoodies #yvrblogger #vancouverblogger #photooftheday #cameraeatsfirst #foodiesofvancouver #foodporn #foodblog #yvreats #igersofvancouver #instafoodie #eeeeeats #britishcolumbia #lunch #dinner #japan #japanesefood A post shared by 𝕄𝕒𝕘𝕘𝕚𝕖 | Vancouver Foodie (@foodiemugs) on Jan 28, 2020 at 3:06pm PST Plus, this is pretty much the only place in the city that specializes in tempura. View this post on Instagram 🍤 VERDICT?? 🍤 So having had amazing tempura in Japan from @tendon_makino (and I would say that's so far the best tempura I've ever had 🙊), I think @kanekohannosuke.vancouver is close, but not quite there yet 😅. I loved the sauce that was drizzled all over the tempura and rice, but in the end, the tempura wasn't super crispy and got a tad oily💧 I'm really glad it tried it though, and I think it's definitely the closest Vancouver has to real authentic TenDon so I'm really glad they decided to open here 👍 . Btw, I am a total soup and noodle girl (obvs) so that could also be why I only thought it was okay 😁 . 🤔 IM INTERESTED TO KNOW....WHAT DID YOU GUYS THINK OF THE TENDON (TEMPURA DON)?? 🤔 A post shared by K I R B Y | Food & Travel (@eatingwithkirby) on Feb 10, 2020 at 9:54pm PST Unless you've been to Japan, you probably haven't tried anything like this before. Glad that the taste is also good in Vancouver🤤The secret sauce, half cooked egg really made this bowl of freshly fried tempura on rice something different and super delicious! Overall really enjoyed my meal! . . . . . #japanesefood #yum #vancouver #kanekohannosuke #weekendvibes #tempura #tendon A post shared by Angela🙃Food Is Life😋 (@lovinglittlethingsinlife) on Feb 18, 2020 at 8:50pm PST This new addition to Vancouver's already fantastic Japanese food scene is sure to be a big hit, especially when you get a craving for fried food.
