A Vancouver Island Teen Wowed The “American Idol” Judges & Left Luke Bryan “Speechless”
She's only 16 years old!
The next Canadian sensation is here! Season 18 of the singing competition series arrived and Vancouver Island's Lauren Spencer-Smith's American Idol audition blew the judges away. The 16-year-old got herself a golden ticket to Hollywood and her audition video will knock your socks off too.
Spencer-Smith sang Pink's "What About Us" accompanied by a background piano player.
When introducing herself and her life in Canada, she said, "Vancouver Island is not too big of an island, not that many people. I feel like I'm a very little girl with a huge dream and American Idol will help me achieve that dream in so many different ways."
According to The Canadian Press, Spencer-Smith's audition was in early November in Oregon after she found out that they were finally accepting Canadian applicants.
Once the incredible performance was over, the judges all praised her for her performance.
A stunned Luke Bryan said, "wow I can't talk."
Lionel Richie added, "You are wise and gifted well beyond your age. I had to close my eyes for a minute and go 'who am I listening to?'"
Katy Perry told the singer that "You may be 16 but that voice is a thousand years old." She compared Spencer-Smith to "a Leona Lewis vibe".
The Canadian Press claims that she also auditioned with Lady Gaga's "Always Remember Us This Way".
Afterwards, Bryan tweeted a clip from the video and added the caption "Cue @DanAndShay because I’m still Speechless."
Spencer-Smith, who already has a verified Twitter account, tweeted out last night the news that she's going to Hollywood.
On YouTube, the singer has 192,000 subscribers and dozens of singing videos. Her most popular one is of her singing Lewis Capaldi's "Someone You Loved" while sitting in the car with her mom. It has 6.6 million views.
Her second most-watched video with 3.9 million views is a duet on stage with Keith Urban when she was just 11-years-old. The two sang "Make You Feel My Love" together.
In the video, Urban shared that they held a competition for someone to sing with him on stage and she was one of two people he "really loved" so he invited her to sing with him as well.
According to ET Canada, the 16-year-old has an independent album called Unplugged Vol. 1. It was nominated for a Juno Award in January under the Adult Contemporary Album of the Year category.
