HBO's critically-acclaimed miniseries Big Little Lies took the world by storm this past year, captivating viewers around the globe with its cleverly unfolded narrative, eccentric characters and gut-punching realism.  It received several nominations and awards from major organizations, including the Screen Actors Guild, Emmys and Golden Globes. The success of the show led to its renewal for a second season, which pleased fans everywhere. But it gets even better.

Meryl Streep will be joining the all-star cast, playing none other than - you guessed it - Perry's mother. Alexander Skarsgård, who won an Emmy and Golden Globe for his portrayal of the abusive Perry, has not revealed any details on his return; but Streep's involvement could hint at possible flashback scenes that would require his presence in season two.

Welcoming #MerylStreep to our tribe of fierce #BigLittleLies women.

According to HBO, Streep's character Mary Louis Wright arrives in Monterey "concerned for the well-being of her grandchildren following her son Perry’s death." Surely we can expect some intense scenes between her and Celeste, played by Nicole Kidman, who also won an Emmy and Golden Globe this year.

Big Little Lies was a passion project by executive producers Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon, who have said most of the original cast from season one will be returning.
