Of the many shows that make their way onto Netflix, true-crime seems to be one of the most popular genres. The streaming service has put out some amazing stories over the years, and they’re continuing that streak with The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez.

Earlier today, Netflix released not only their content lineup for the month of March but also the trailer for their latest true-crime project. The new docu-series tells a heartbreaking tale unlike anything else they’ve done before.

PEOPLE reports that in 2013, eight-year-old Gabriel Fernandez was found in his family’s Palmdale home naked, inflicted with injuries such as severe burns, shattered ribs, a cracked skull, and BB pellets buried in his body. Two days after being discovered, the young boy died.

In the trailer for their latest project, Netflix tells the story of Fernandez’s death, and how his mother, Pearl Fernandez, and her boyfriend, Isauro Aguirre were arrested.

PEOPLE also reports that in 2018, Aguirre was sentenced to death after having been convicted of first-degree murder with the special circumstance of intentional murder by torture.

What makes this docu-series so unique is that it also explores how the government services that were put in place to protect young Gabriel managed to fail him.

The trailer explains that over the years, plenty of evidence and reports stacked up that Gabriel was being abused in his home, but the social workers serving him let these slide for reasons that the documentary seeks to understand.

“I think Gabriel could have been saved about a dozen different ways and that’s what’s so intense and so heartbreaking about his story,” the series director, Brian Knappenberger told PEOPLE.

Earlier this year, Netflix also released Killer Inside: The Mind of Aaron Hernandez, a chilling docu-series about a professional NFL player who found himself struggling to fight the demons of mental illness and brain trauma.

All 6 episodes of The Trials of Gabriel Fernandez are coming to Netflix on February 26. You can check out the trailer for the new show below.
