Fashion Brand Chanel Is In Hot Water For Sexualizing 16-Year-Old Kaia Gerber In This Recent Bag Ad
What do you think?
Chanel is indisputably one of the most recognizable brands in the fashion industry. The brand has been around FOREVER and has a reputation for quality high end products. They sell basically everything, including clothing, watches, jewelry, makeup, fragrances and of course handbags.
But it’s one of their recent ad campaigns for one of those much-coveted handbags is causing quite a controversy online.
It features 16-year-old Kaia Gerber, who is the daughter of the world famous model and actress Cindy Crawford. Many are really not happy with the position in which the teen was made to pose in for the ad campaign.
As you can see in the photo she is holding a handbag… but how long did it take you to see that? It’s barely noticeable at all, at first glance.
Some of the comments on the photoset on Chanel’s Facebook page include:
“She’s beautiful, but a still a child. If Chanel intends to be considered by a wider audience, they should consider models who have experienced at least the end of their teenage hood....”
Another person also seemed confused with what sort of message the photoshoot was sending.
“Seriously? A 16-year-old? What exactly are you promoting?”
Not everyone agreed though, one person commented saying, "Yes, absolutely stunning! Haters go away please."
16 is apparently the legal age for women who want to walk on the catwalk so in case you were wondering if there were any laws about what sort of work you can do in the fashion world when you are under the age of 18, this is completely legal.
But in the wake of the #MeToo movement societies attitudes about how women are portrayed and treated in situations like this seems to be changing.
