Canadians swept up at this year's Grammy awards, and we couldn't be more proud.

Alessia Cara, a Brampton Ontario native, became the first Canadian-born winner of the best new artist Grammy at Sunday night's televised ceremony. As she stepped out on stage looking visibly shaken, the 21-year-old accepted the award - the first Grammy of her career - saying that she's been "pretend winning" Grammys in the shower since she was a kid and encouraged people to “support real music and real artists,” saying that “everyone deserves the same shot.”

Cara thanked her family, friends, team, and finally her fans: “You guys are the reason I don’t have to win Grammys is the shower anymore,” she said, before ending the speech off by acknowledging all the artists making quality music without proper recognition.

But Canadian pride at the 2018 Grammys didn't end there.

Toronto's own homegrown hero, The Weeknd (aka Abel Tesfaye), won Best Urban Contemporary Album, with his 2016 record Starboy taking home the award over Childish Gambino’s Awaken, My Love!, SZA’s Ctrl, Khalid’s American Teen, and 6LACK’s FREE 6LACK. Best Urban Contemporary Album was the Weeknd’s sole nomination at the 2018 Grammys, and winning it landed him the honour of being the first artist to win the award twice.

You'd be forgiven for not knowing that, though, as Abel was among a group of Canadians who scored golden gramophones in a pre-telecast ceremony, where most of the awards are handed out.

Leonard Cohen’s song “You Want It Darker” won a Grammy for best rock performance. The track appears on the Montreal singer-songwriter’s final album of the same name. Nova Scotia's Barabara Hannigan also picked up a Grammy in the best classical solo vocal album category for her song Crazy Girl Crazy. It’s the first Grammy win for the contemporary opera singer.

And Charles Moniz of Burlington, Ontario shared a Grammy win for 24K Magic by Bruno Mars, which scored best engineered album, non-classical.

Way to go, Canada!
