Avril Lavigne & Justin Bieber Aren’t The Only Canadian Celebs To Battle Lyme Disease
It's an extremely serious diagnosis.
Fans who have been wondering why the "One Time" singer hasn't released an album in four years and has only very slowly released new songs got the devastating reason why yesterday. Justin Bieber's Lyme disease battle is similar to Avril Lavigne and Shania Twain who also fought it years ago.
TMZ first revealed the news about Bieber when their sources watched his documentary that's coming out later this month which discusses .
The singer took to Instagram to explain that "While a lot of people kept saying Justin Bieber looks like shit, on meth etc. they failed to realize I've been recently diagnosed with Lyme disease, not only that but had a serious case of chronic mono".
Shortly after that,of him about her battle which she came out about in 2015. She shared that "Writing #HeadAboveWater helped me get through the worst of it, but the bad days still come and go. At the time, putting together my album saved my life."
She continued to explain that The Avril Lavigne Foundation "supports people with Lyme disease, serious illness or disabilities."
Even Twain battled the disease years ago and it halted her singing career for quite a while.
She contracted Lyme disease in 2004 and it hugely affected her vocal cords making her unable to sing or tour for years.
According to iHeartRadio, she "was bitten in 2003 while in Norfolk, Virginia" and actually saw the tick fall off of her. They quoted Twain saying, "'I was on tour, so I almost fell off the stage every night. I was very, very dizzy and didn't know what was going on. It's just one of those things you don't suspect.'"
The disease ended up causing dysphonia which John Hopkins Medicine defines as having symptoms that cause "involuntary spasms in the muscles of the voice box or larynx. This causes the voice to break, and have a tight, strained, or strangled sound."
Twain returned from a hiatus in 2011 with a single titled "Today Is Your Day" and even had a residency in Las Vegas until 2014. But there's a 15-year gap between albums when Up! came out in 2002 and the most recent one came in 2017 called Now.
Insider reported that these Canadian singers are among over a dozen more celebrities who have fought Lyme disease.
They noted that Ben Stiller had it in 2011 when he had an inflamed knee and doctors couldn't figure out what was causing it until he was diagnosed.
Kelly Osbourne also contracted it around the same time as Twain in 2004 and she "went undiagnosed for nearly a decade." She got bitten by a tick at a reindeer sanctuary in England that her mother bought her father for his 56th birthday.
Insider continued with Alec Baldwin, Hailey Bieber's uncle, who actually had the disease twice and first opened up about it in 2011. Then he mentioned it again in 2017 at the Bay Area Lyme Foundation event noting he had been bitten once a long time ago and again years later.
Bella Hadid and her mother Yolanda were both diagnosed as well and Yolanda opened up about their battle back in 2015.
Other celebrities that Insider mentioned include Daryl Hall, Kris Kristofferson, Thalía Mottola, and Debbie Gibson.
