Ryan Reynolds Opens Up About His Battle With Anxiety
This can't be fun for him to deal with.
Movie stars can seem so much larger than life that it’s hard to remember sometimes that they’re just people like the rest of us with actual fears.
One of these people who has chosen to open about the issues he has around anxiety is Canadian actor and Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds.
You wouldn’t know it from the way that he sarcastically seems to be joking around on the set but Reynolds says he gets really anxious before doing certain things.
For instance, the actor says that he feels nauseous before every single talk-show appearance he has to do and stresses himself out to the point that he thinks he may actually die.
Reynolds says that he’s been like this his whole life.
And the level of anxiety that he feels can be very wide ranging, he says that he experiences “both in the lighthearted ‘I’m anxious about this’ kind of thing, and I’ve been to the depths of the darker end of the spectrum, which is not fun.”
He says that his sense of humour acts as a sort of self-defense mechanism for him when he’s feeling extremely anxious.
In his early 20’s he says that he used to self-medicate, but stopped after some of his friends died of overdoses.
Reynolds says that the good thing about playing Deadpool right now is that he can do a lot of his interviews in character, which keeps the anxiety levels much lower for him.
We’re glad that Reynolds has found something that has worked.
