Best And Worst Things About Being Single In Your 20s
Enjoy your selfish years!
I feel a little weird stating my relationship status on the internet but I am single and am in my 20s, so there it is! I've been in relationships before and while some of them were great, others were just, not.
For a while there I thought it was super important to have a boyfriend and be in a committed relationship and if I wasn't I was doing something seriously wrong in life. But since my last relationship wasn't great I've realized that being in a relationship isn't actually that important, especially if it's not a healthy relationship.
There's so much more to life than finding someone to share it with, it's actually living it. That may be a little cheesy but it's true! Why waste your time in a crappy relationship when you can travel the world, spend time with your best friends and get further in your career?
There are tons of things that are great about being single but there are things you miss about being in a relationship at the same time.
-You Can Flirt With Whoever You Want, Whenever You Want
When you're in your 20s you're basically surrounded with romantic prospects every where you go. Chances are you're either still in university or you're working some sort of people-oriented job like retail or waitressing. This gives you tons of chances to meet new people and you can flirt and hookup with as many people as you want without having to feel an ounce of guilt! You're young, you're single and you deserve to have as much fun as you want.
-The Sometimes Very Awkward Situations You Encounter
Flirting constantly, going on dates, and hooking with whoever you want is a great thing but there are times when you'll end up in super awkward situations because of it. You could meet a guy when you're out partying and he seemed super funny when you were drunk but when you actually go on a date with him he turns out like our good friend Channing Tatum up there.
-Every Night Can Be Girl's Night
The great thing about being single is that you can make every night girls night! Whether you want to spend your night dancing your hearts out at the club or spending the night watching Netflix, eating pizza and drinking wine as long as you're with your girls the night is bound to be an amazing one!
-If Your Friends Are In Relationships You'll Constantly Be The Third Wheel
Oh yes, the dreaded 'third wheel' status, I know it well! If you have an amazing girlfriend that really values your friendship just as much as her relationship with her boyfriend, third wheel status shouldn't be all that bad. I used to third wheel with my friend and her boyfriend all the time and I never minded it because it felt more like 3 friends hanging out then me intruding on a date.
But, this isn't the case with all friends and I'm sure that it can be a little awkward when your friend and her boyfriend only want to be couple-y when they hang out and you're just there...
-You Always Have The Entire Bed To Yourself
There's really no better feeling then being able to stretch out over the entire bed when you sleep. Need all four pillows when you sleep? No problem! Like to hog all the covers? No one's there to complain! Snore while you sleep? You won't be keeping anyone up!
-You Don't Wake Up To Cute "Good Morning" Texts
Maybe some people don't mind this but in my past relationships I loved getting good morning texts and I do miss it a little bit. It's nice to know that someone is thinking about you first thing when they wake up in the morning and they can't wait to text you. Everyone's different though and maybe you didn't care much for good morning texts in the first place!
-You Can Travel Wherever You Want
This is a major one because I'm a firm believer in traveling as much as you can while you're still in your 20s. What other time is there than now, when you're young and free, to see the world! If you're single it's even easier because you don't have to worry about whether your S/O wants to come with you or leaving them behind if they don't. All you have to do is grab a friend, pack your bags and go! That's the true definition of freedom right there.
-You Don't Have Anyone To Go Out With Regularly
Maybe the reason you can afford that trip of a lifetime next year is because you don't have to pitch in on consistent dates. This can be both a pro and a con of being single, but mostly a con I think.
There's been so many times when I wanted to check out a new restaurant, cafe or bar but my friends were busy and I didn't have that person I could call up that was there for just that reason. It's not the worst thing in the world but it does make some lonely nights when you'd rather be doing other things from time to time.
-You Don't Have To Deal With Any Boyfriend Drama
We all know the drama that comes along with having a S/O, that's just how it goes. Whether it's drama with their ex, you see they're texting someone else, or maybe your friend finds their active Tinder account, whatever it is there's bound to be drama in a relationship. When you're single you don't have to deal with this at all! Your problems are only your own and no one else is adding to them.
-You Have To Listen To Your Friends Constant Boyfriend Drama
Having is a best friend means that you listen to all their problems, fears and thoughts 24/7, whenever they need to talk! This a great thing, don't get me wrong but when your friend is constantly complaining about her boyfriend whenever you hang out it does become a little annoying. You need some girl time too, right?
-You Have Extra Time To Focus On Yourself
Without a boyfriend to constantly text throughout the day and make time to hang out with as much as possible, you end up with a lot of free time on your hands. This is the perfect opportunity to focus on yourself and the things you love to do! Focus on your work, education or figure out a new hobby that you might like and get really good at it. The world is your oyster, basically!
-You May Feel A Bit Lonely From Time To Time
With all that free time, you may find yourself feeling a bit lonely from time to time. Even if you have a group of good friends or even just one or two, you can't help feeling the sense that you're missing a vital relationship in your life. It's true that being in a mutual relationship with someone adds a special connection to your life that you just can't get from friendships, but there's always ways to cure loneliness!
-You Don't Have To Impress Your S/O's Family Or Friends
We all know how awkward 'meeting the parents' is when you're getting serious with your S/O. It's super stressful and you basically have to spend the night trying to be yourself but not too much so that they don't think you're a terrible match for their son/daughter. When you're single, you don't have to deal with this situation at all, which is a huge relief.
-Your Family Always Asks Why You're Still Single
Ah yes, the dreaded question at every family event throughout the year. You can always expect your grandma or nosy aunt to ask whether you have a boyfriend or not right in the middle of dinner and then grill you about why you've been single for so long.
- You Don't Have To Look Nice If You Don't Want To
You can spend all day watching Netflix in sweats and not shaving your legs for weeks if that's what you want! There's no one there to look cute for or impress by dressing up so you can be as cozy as you want to. But there's also something to be said about learning to dress up and look nice for yourself when you're single as well!
-There's No One There To Help You Around The House
There are a few perks of having a boyfriend and one of them is being able to call him for help when you can't open a jar, you need him to reach something on the top shelf, or there's a spider that suddenly appeared in your shower and you him to kill it for you.
-You Can Send Cheesy Pickup Lines On Dating Apps
This one isn't for everyone. I think I've deleted Tinder and re-added it at least five times now because sometimes it just sucks. But it can be fun to go on dating apps knowing there's no commitment necessary and just send out the cheesiest pickup lines you can think of and see what you get back!
-You Have To Go On First Dates Over And Over Again
You don't have to go on dates if you don't want to while you're single but chances are you'll try out dating at least a few different people. This means going on first dates over and over again. First dates are the most awkward time because you don't know the person and you're basically checking off a list of 'small talk' points throughout the evening. First dates can either go really well or really horribly there usually isn't an in between.
-You Don't Have To Worry About Jealousy
One of the best things about being single is being able to go out with your friends and flirt with whoever you want without someone there to get jealous. You also don't have to worry about getting jealous when your S/O goes out with their friends and whether they're going to get hit on or not.
-Your Friends Will Try To Set You Up All The Time
It's inevitable that if your best friend is in a relationship she'll try to set you up with one of her boyfriend's friends and you'll all have to go on an awkward double date or even a blind date just the two of you *cringe*. Sometimes this can work out but usually it just isn't a fun time.
