Anyone who lives in Alberta could tell you that it's one of the most picturesque places in the world. Someone must have told Hollywood because the film and television industry seems to think so too! 

Our towering mountains and downtown cityscapes provide the most epic backdrops to some of the most iconic movies. Check out this list, and some of them might surprise you!

1. The Revenant (2015)

Locations used: Kananaskis Country and the Alberta Badlands

Ah yes, the film where Leo finally got his Oscar. We Albertans like to think that maybe it was some of our Albertan magic that contributed to that.

2. Brokeback Mountain (2005)

Locations used: Metro Calgary and Ranchman's Cookhouse and Dancehall

This classic film starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger as cowboys caught in a forbidden romance in the fictional town of Signal, Wyoming.

3. Game of Thrones

Locations used: Calgary sound stages and Banff

An Albertan wolf plays Jon Snow's direwolf Ghost, and some of those scenes are filmed in local sound stages. Some of Arya's scenes with wolves from season 7 are also filmed in Banff.


4. Heartland

Locations used: High River and Calgary studios

This entirely Canadian show is one of Alberta's pride and joys, and is filmed exclusively within Alberta. If you're looking to get your country fix, this is the perfect show for you.

5. Inception (2010)

Locations used: Fortress Mountain

This neo-noir science fiction heist film used Alberta's Fortress Mountain as the location of the dream within a dream... within a dream.

6. Interstellar (2014)

Locations used: Okotoks, Fort Macleod, Longview, and Canmore

Did you know that the baseball field with the sandstorm was actually Seaman Stadium in Okotoks? Pretty neat!

7. Fargo

Locations used: Calgary

The TV show, not the 1996 movie. They have filmed all three seasons in and around Calgary, and the pilot actually features Inglewood Pizza as Norm's Pizza.

8. War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)

Locations used: Fortress Mountain

This is one popular mountain, hey? Production was predominantly based in BC, but they filmed for roughly a week in the Albertan Rockies

9. Legends of the Fall (1994)

Locations used: Morley and Banff

Yes, Brad Pitt graced Alberta with his presence while filming for this movie that features the recognizable Bow River.

10. Unforgiven (1992)

Locations used: Longview

This film is set in the 1800's and depicts a wild west setting, and of course starring Clint Eastwood. They built the Western town sets near Longview, AB.

11. Shanghai Noon (2000)

Locations used: Drumheller and CL Western Town

Owen Wilson and Jackie Chan star in this western film, produced in Drumheller and in the old-timey ranch and studio CL Western Town.
